The Houston Astros Youth Academy will be offering 'Select' youth academy members special summer programming. Summer programming will focus on aspects 'Outside the Lines' of baseball/softball and will be to provide participants with knowledge, education and skills needed to identify and pursue careers in professional baseball and other parts of the sports industry. As with all Astros Youth Academy programs the 'Outside the Lines' summer programming is free, but to participate we must have a commitment from the parents and members alike to attend all sessions.

AYA UMPS CARE Official Leadership Summer Umpiring Program

A 6-week umpiring course focused on leadership, sportsmanship and mentorship through the lens of baseball/softball & umpiring. The course will introduce young men and young women to umpiring rules mechanics and financial literacy. Participants will gain direct, usable umpire skills to become an umpire upon completion of the 6-week program. Participant will receive a junior umpire certification.  Participants will be trained and receive valuable instruction from current/former MLB Umpires and will be gifted credit to purchase a starter umpire set. The program will begin Monday, June 8, 2026 and will conclude on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The AYA UMPS CARE program will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Bob Watson Education Center located at the Astros Youth Academy. Participants will also receive on-field training and following the completion of the course youth can earn between $35.00 - $65.00/game umpiring in the Houston area. Please note that summers are hot and participants will be outdoors for parts of each session. Please wear T-shirt, hat/visor, shorts and tennis shoes (no crocs, flip-flops or open-toe shoes). Participants are asked to bring at least 2 bottles of water or water jug each day. Please do not sign up if you child has already been through the program.

  • Grades: 8th - 12th (Grade level based on 2024-2025 school year)
  • Attire: T-shirt, hat/visor, shorts and tennis shoes (no crocs, flip-flops or open-toe shoes)

Participants that take part in the Astros Nike RBI Baseball/Softball Summer League will be allowed to bring all necessary baseball/softball equipment for games and or practice that take place later in the day. Bathrooms will be available to allow participants to change to baseball/softball attire.

The program will be conducted in the Bob Watson Education Center and Field #1 located at the S. Victory entrance of Sylvester Turner Park (2801 S. Victory Dr.; 77088).

Participants must have the desire to attend EACH day that program is scheduled.
